Andorra is a small country nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. The capital, Andorra la Vella, lies in a basin surrounded by trees. Founded in the early 9th century, this city is particularly popular with tourists, including the Church of Sant'Armenol (11th century), the Casa de la Vallée (16th century), the seat of government, and numerous medieval buildings and workshops. The heart of the city is the Barri Antique (Old Quarter), located on the site of the village that eventually became Andorra la Vella. The pride of the area is the picturesque Casa de la Vall ("House of the Valleys"), built as the country's parliamentary palace in 1702. Surrounding the palace are the Sala de la Justicia, the only courthouse in the country; the Sala del Consell, the country's parliament building, whose upper floors house a magnificent philatelic museum; and the castle-like Casa Sete Panis ("Chest of the Seven Locks"). The city's cultural center, the site of numerous ceremonies and a popular gathering place for locals in the evenings, is Plaza la Poble, which also houses the National Theater and the Academy of Music. Be sure to visit the Church of Santa Coloma, the Santuario de Meritxell, and the largest medieval bridge in the country in La Marguineda, near the capital.
